Oboe and Cor Anglais
A Musical Journey
Martin completed his undergraduate studies at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1988, where he studied under Jeffrey Crellin. Following that, Martin studied with the English oboist, Anthony Camden, and soon after he went to Rotterdam, to complete his studies with Emanuel Abbuhl.
Martin gained his early professional orchestral experience in Australia, before he took the job as Principal Oboe in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in New Zealand, in 1995 until 2008. During that time he regularly appeared as a soloist in New Zealand with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra and the Dunedin Sinfonia.
In 2009, Martin has taken up the position of Principal Cor Anglais in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and he has taught oboe at the Auckland University School of Music for 23 years. In that time, he has taught a small number of oboists, and three of these students have advanced into professional orchestral Principal oboe positions in New Zealand, Australia and in the United Kingdom.
